Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Perry made her debut on television as Jackie Harris, a character played by her mother in Roseanne, an ABC comedy Roseanne. The actress did not go on to explore acting as a profession until after she had reached the age of adulthood due to her parents being concerned about the adverse impact stress might have. Perry confessed that she wasn't at ease in the stage during high school, but started acting to meet new people during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry, after graduating from Boston University, moved to New York in search of television roles. Her small part was on TV shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, homesickness drove her to California to find theater work. The Other Place was performed by her and her mom on Broadway in 2013. In the year 2015, she was together with Kevin McKidd alongside her mother in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer-winning drama Anna Christie. The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble is located in West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in nine episodes of the ABC crime thriller The Family in 2016. In 2017, Perry starred in a role on ABC's political thriller Scandal along with her father. The actress also portrayed her older Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon, which is a CBS spin-off from The Big Bang Theory. The role was offered to her in an audition that was open despite having a connection to the role.
